Mr. Bracken's 7th year of teaching was also the 30th anniversary school year for Las Vegas High School's Sahara Avenue location. To commemorate the anniversary as well as to incorporate elements of the city of Las Vegas, all class logos and team names were inspired by hotels, either current or past, of Las Vegas. The only notable exception is that of Student Council whose logo is inspired by the Welcome to Las Vegas sign.
Below are images of each team's logo, including periods that were not used due to Student Council periods or to planning period time.

2024 French Class League logo
For the first time the regular season would feature head-to-head competitions. 5 French classes plus one section of Student Council would be competing in a 15-week long competition where each class would go head-to-head with the other classes three times over the second and third quarters. There were a few weeks of break between Thanksgiving and Winter breaks. Each week, classes were scored based on attendance, grades, class participation, and engagement in their matches. At the end of the week, the class with the higher score would be declared the winner and would earn two points in the standings. If there was a tie, each class would receive one point. Losing classes received no points.
Six classes competed in the 2024 French Class League which meant that the top 2 classes in the standings would earn a first-round bye in the Goeller Cup Playoffs.
Each class played all other classes once before Thanksgiving Break through the first 5 weeks. In week 1 of the competition, Fitzgerald (4th) defeated Sahara (8th) by a score of 3-2. Caesars (3rd) defeated Flamingo (2nd), 6-3, and StuCo tied with the Strat (7th) in a 2-2 draw.
In week 2, Flamingo (2nd) defeated Fitzgerald (4th) in a 3-2 contest while Caesars (3rd) defeated the Strat (7th) by the same score. StuCo earned their first win of the season, defeating Sahara 3-1.
Week 3's results saw a 3rd consecutive victory for Caesars who won 5-2 over Fitzgerald. Flamingo defeated StuCo, 3-2. Sahara's losing streak extended to 3 weeks by falling to the Strat in a 4-1 contest.
Caesars Palace remained undefeated through week four after defeating the still-winless Sahara, 5-3. Flamingo won 3-2 over the Strat and StuCo won a close 5-4 contest against Fitzgerald.
Week 5 marked the end of this competition in 2023 with a pause in the gameplay over Thanksgiving break, final exams, and winter break. Caesars Palace suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 4-3 against Student Council. Flamingo pulled even in the standings with a victory over Sahara, 3-2. This week saw the first battle of the only level two French classes. Each class, Period 7 and Period 4, has six members of the inaugural Goeller Cup-winning class at Las Vegas High School from last year, making this matchup an even more exciting challenge! In their first meeting of this school year, The Strat defeated Fitzgerald by a 4-2 score. Sahara started the season winless with no points through the first 5 weeks of the competition.
Period 3 and Period 2 led the way to start the LCF, tied with a 4-1-0 record after 5 weeks.

Week 6 saw a repeat of all week 1 match-ups. The marquee matchup of this week was the battle for first place in the standings between Caesars Palace and Flamingo. In week #1 it was Period 3 who took the win and they would double down in week #6, defeating Period 2 by a score of 2-0. This was the first shutout score ever and gave Caesars Palace sole possession of first place. Elsewhere, Sahara earned their first victory of the season by dealing a knocking blow to Fitzgerald in a 6-2 rout, fueled mostly by one day of perfect attendance. The final match-up of the week was between the Strat and StuCo, which the Strat won 4-3.
Caesars Palace kept up their win streak and extended their lead in the standings by defeating the Strat 6-5. Sahara earned their second win of the season, taking down StuCo in a 5-4 victory. Flamingo and Fitzgerald tied, 2-2.
Flamingo snuck out a win against StuCo in week #8, 3-2. The victory brought them back within two points of Caesars Palace, who fell 2-1 against Fitzgerald. And Sahara picked up their third win in a row with a 3-2 victory over the Strat.
In week 9, Flamingo and the Strat ended in a 2-2 tie while Caesars Palace put an end to Sahara's win streak, thanks to a 4-1 victory. StuCo ended their four-week winless streak by defeating Fitzgerald, 4-2.
Week 10 was the highest-scoring week of the competition to this point. Sahara and Flamingo finished this week tied at 4. StuCo narrowly edged out Caesars in a 5-4 victory to pull within three points of first place. The Strat also added two points to their standings total with a 5-3 win over Fitzgerald. Caesars Palace was in first place after week 10 by one point over Flamingo, three points over StuCo, and four points over the Strat.
Period 3 sat atop the standings through week 10.

Week 11 started the final round of regular-season meetings between all classes and a first-place showdown between Caesars and Flamingo, the two finalist classes from last year and the top two classes all year long. Caesars had won the first two meetings of the season but Flamingo managed to square off in a tie, putting them just one point out of first place in the standings. The Strat earned the highest point total of the year in their victory, 8-7, over StuCo. Fitzgerald also managed to sneak out a low-scoring shutout victory against Sahara, 2-0, which brought these two back to even in the standings.
In the 12th week of competition, Flamingo moved back into first place in the standings as the second-period class took down Fitzgerald in a 4-2 victory. The win got them to 16 points on the season and vaulted them into first place in the standings, thanks to Caesars Palace losing 4-2 to the Strat. The Strat's victory brought Period 7 to within striking distance of first place, putting the top three classes all within two points of each other. Sahara also edged out StuCo in a close contest with a 4-3 victory for their fourth win of the season.
Week 13 was another close competition week and the top three classes in the standings continued their domination, all earning wins against the bottom three classes. Caesars defeated Fitzgerald, 3-2, and Flamingo defeated StuCo, 4-3. Meanwhile the Strat picked up a 3-2 victory over Sahara, which secured a spot in the top three by the end of the season. StuCo locked up 4th place in the overall standings, now unable to pass or be passed by any other classes.
Week 14 was bizarre, scheduling-wise, due to ACT testing at the school. Due to this, the scores for the week were primarily based on grades without any impact on attendance. The Strat moved into second place by defeating Flamingo, 2-1. Flamingo dropped to third place in the standings with their loss and thanks to a 2-1 victory by Caesars over Sahara. Caesars retook the lead in the standings but the top three were separated by just one point. StuCo defeated Fitzgerald by a 2-1 score.
In the final week of the regular season, each of the top three classes faced a bottom three opponent, meaning the top two spaces (and first-round byes) were still up for grabs. In another close week, The Strat ended up on top when they defeated Fitzgerald 4-3. They moved into first place in the standings with a record of 9-4-2, good for 20 points and a first-round bye. Flamingo finished in second place in the standings after a 4-3 victory over Saraha. Their record was 8-2-4, also good for 20 points. With one less win, the Strat is ranked higher than them. Caesar's Palace had led the standings nearly the entire season but fell to StuCo in a 4-3 contest in the final week which caused them to drop out of the top 2 positions. They will face Fitzgerald in the first round. Sahara will face StuCo in the first round.
Period 7 "The Strat" won 6 in a row to end the season, vaulting them to the top spot in the standings. They finished with 20 points from a 9-4-2 record.

Period 7 "The Strat" won the 2023-2024 French Class League and subsequently earned a 1st-round bye in the 2024 Goeller Cup Playoffs. Their record of 9-4-2 (20 points) set the bar for this format of competition. This is the first time that Period 7 has finished in the top spot of the season. This is the second time in history that Period 7 earned a first-round bye; the other being a 2nd-place finish in 2019 at Millbrook High School.
Tied in points but with one less victory in an 8-2-4 record was Period 2 "Flamingo" who also earned a first-round bye in this 6-class format. This is the second consecutive year that Period 2 earned a bye, having placed first in last year's competition. Period 2 is the defending Goeller Cup Champion, though it's worth noting that all of the winning students from that class were members of Period 7 and Period 4 this year.
Each round of the 2024 Goeller Cup Playoffs lasted 5 class days, spanning over roughly two weeks, thanks to LVHS's block schedule. The first round started on Wednesday, March 20. The semi-final round started on Friday, April 5. After a one-class day break for championship prep day, the 2024 Goeller Cup Finals started on Monday, April 22, and concluded on Friday, May 3, 2024. The 2024 champions party was held on May 8.
The first round of the 2024 Goeller Cup Playoffs started on Wednesday, March 20, 2024. Period 3 Caesars Palace was the only class competing on A-Days in the first round.
This is the second all-time meeting between Periods 3 and 4, the first meeting being in 2019's first-round series at Millbrook High School. Period 3 won 3-2. The winner of this match-up advances to the final four to meet the second-ranked Period 2, Flamingo.
Caesars Palace jumped out to an early lead in the playoffs, leading all 5 categories after their first class day. Fitzgerald managed to bring things even again after their first day, taking over two of the three categories. After two days each, Caesars still led the series 3-2, holding leads in points (57-48), points per student (1.58-1.30) and positive percentage (89% vs. 84%). Fitzgeralds lead in French percentage (44% vs. 11%) and highest student (10-8).
Caesars held a 3-2 or 4-1 lead over their opponent Fitzgerald since the competition started through the first three days. Fitzgerald managed to turn the tides and took a 4-1 lead into the final day of competition. It was the first time that they led in the series and it put them in great shape to advance to the semi-final round. Caesars found themselves trailing on the outside, looking in with just one day left in round 1 of competition. Entering the final day, Fitzgerald led total points by 21 points (130-109), average points per student (3.51-3.02), positive point percentage (88%-87%), and French percentage (44%-39%). Caesars Palace maintained a lead in the highest student by two points (14-12).
On their last day of round 1, Caesars managed to retake the lead in every points category and padded their lead in highest student. They had a net gain of 59 points to take them from 21 points down to 38 points ahead. They led average points per student by 1.16 points and positive point percentage by 0.92. Their French percentage score jumped to 49.47%, which would be a record-setting score in this category unless surpassed by Fitzgerald. In highest student they opened up a 10-point lead of 22-12.
A day later, Fitzgerald was unable to complete their comeback and their underdog storyline. They certainly earned enough points to pass Caesars but unfortunately also had several negative points that brought their net total down. With a one-student difference in roster size, the advantage went to Caesars in average points per student, which ended up being the deciding category for this match-up.
Caesars Palace defeated Fitzgerald in average points per student (4.67-4.57), positivity (89%-87%), and highest student (22-16). Fitzgerald managed to snag wins in overall points (169-168) and set a new record for French-speaking percentage at 51.81% (vs. 49.47%). Both classes had record-setting numbers in this category but this is the first time that more than 50% of a class's points were for speaking French. It's a true testament to Fitzgerald's dedication to wanting to win. Unfortunately, they came up just shy, needing only four more points to have won the average point per student category. This record would be broken in the following round.
Caesars Palace advanced to the semi-final round against Flamingo, setting up a rematch of last year's finals (period 2 vs. period 3).

This is the first-ever meeting between Periods 6 and 8. Since Student Council has two class periods, only the period versus their opponent will be the scored day. So since their first-round opponent is a B-day class, their scoring will come from their B-day class. The winner of this series advances to the final four against top-ranked Period 7, The Strat.
Through the first two days of competition, Sahara managed to maintain a 4-1 series lead, trailing only in the positive point percentage category. Through two full days, Period 8 Sahara had earned more points than any class competing (65) but also had the most lost points (10), as well. They lead 55-50 in total points, 1.57-1.38 in average points, 10%-0% in French percentage, and 11-3 in highest student.
Student Council continued to trail 4-1, failing to make up any significant ground on Sahara. They entered the final day of competition only trailing by 9 points total (118-109), average point per student (3.37-3.03), and Sahara maintained a substantial lead in the highest student category, leading 23-6. In their special percentage category, Sahara led 30.1%-09.2%. StuCo only managed to keep a lead in positive point percentage, where they maintained a 100% streak through 4 days.
StuCo made a last-minute charge on the final day, clawing back from a 4-1 deficit to a 3-2 series, with the balance of the series hanging on the average point per student. A new student was added to the roster for Sahara on the final day, but this student was not included in the scoring data for this round (they will count for any subsequent rounds).
Sahara advanced to the semi-final round by defeating StuCo in a 3-2 score. Sahara won average point per student (4.34-4.25), French-speaking percentage (25%-10%), and highest student (30-8). StuCo earned more points on the final day, ending just ahead in overall points (153-152), and also won positivity (100%-85%), having lost no points at all. StuCo's 8 points for their highest student is a record-setting low number, but it is worth noting that their point values were not earned in the same way as previous classes in the history of this competition.
Sahara advanced to the semi-final round against the top-ranked Strat in an "end-of-the-day" showdown Period 7 vs. Period 8 match-up.

The 2024 Goeller Cup Semi-Finals are scheduled to start on Friday, April 5, 2024 and will conclude on April 18, 2024. There will be one substitute teacher day for each class in this round on April 11 and 12 where points for these days will be calculated based on completion of work. Period 7 and Period 2 advanced automatically to this round as the top 2 finalists in the regular season standings.
The Strat won the regular season for the first time in the history of this competition. Sahara advanced to the semi-final round as the fifth-seeded team after defeating Student Council in the first round. This is the second all-time meeting between Periods 7 and 8. The only previous meeting of these two class periods was during the 2022 Goeller Cup Playoffs 1st round at Millbrook High School; Period 7 won that series 3-2.
The Strat maintained the lead for all class days except for the first-day cycle. Sahara held a 4-1 lead after the first day but the Strat turned the tide on their second day and didn't look back, never trailing in more than two categories in a single day of the Semi-Final round after that point. The only place where they consistently trailed was in the highest student category, which they ended up losing by a single point, 31-30. After the first day of classes, Sahara led total points by 20 and started with an incredible 73% French-speaking percentage.
Through the first two classes, the Strat managed to pull ahead 3-2, leading in total points (116-95), average (3.20-2.64), and positivity (98%-84%). Sahara maintained a lead in the highest student (15-12) and French percentage (65%-46%). By the end of four classes, the Strat had pulled ahead in French-speaking percentage, extending their lead to 4-1.
Entering the final day, Sahara needed to earn 106 points outright to surpass the Strat to advance to the Finals. Since these classes are evenly rostered, the total point and average points per student would be won together, and 106 points would have won both categories; they already entered their last day ahead in highest student, which would've completed the three categories needed to advance.
The Strat defeated Sahara by a 4-1 score to advance to the Goeller Cup Finals for the first time in French class history. They earned 251 points (vs. 209), a 6.97 average point per student (vs. 5.81), earned 98% positive points (vs. 89%), and set a record in the French-speaking points percentage category with an impressive 57.81%. Sahara, notably, also scored an impressive 56.84% in this category. Both would have been record-setting numbers. They also won highest earning student, just barely sneaking by with a 29-22 mark.

Flamingo advanced to the semi-finals by finishing 2nd in the regular season standings. Caesars Palace narrowly missed placing in the top 2 spots and had to earn their way to the semi-final round, which they did by defeating Fitzgerald in round 1. This is the second all-time meeting between class Periods 2 and 3. The only prior matchup was last year's Finals which Period 2 won 3-2 to win the 2023 Goeller Cup.
Caesars Palace entered this series as the favorite, despite being the lower-ranked class. After the first cycle of class days, Flamingo opened up a 4-1 series lead. But, their lead in total points after the first class was just 4 points over Caesars. The positive point percentage for both classes was in the low-mid 90s and Caesars held an impressive 63% French points score to Flamingo's 42% (a standard score for LVHS in this category). These two were tied in highest student after day one, both having a 7-point earner. The tie-break was broken by the second-highest earner which Flamingo held 6-5.
Flamingo maintained a 3-2 lead after the second-day cycle with a 17-15 lead in the highest student, and a better average point/student score at 3.00 vs 2.97, a difference of only 0.03 percent. The positive point percentage category was also extremely close, with Flamingo ahead by 0.10% after two classes. Caesars led in overall points (110-86) and French-speaking (60.6%-38.2%). There would be no change in the lead of these categories through day 3.
Entering the final class cycle, Caesars ended ahead in 4 categories after an underwhelming 4th class day for Flamingo. Into their final class, it was still anyone's game. Caesars and Flamingo were tied in the highest student category but the advantage went to Caesars for having a higher second-ranked student through four classes. Caesars also led total points, positive points, and French-speaking percentage. Flamingo only held an advantage in the average point per student category at 4.9-4.7. The difference between the two classes was 1.2 points in the positive percentage category.
For their final class day, Flamingo needed to earn 60 points to surpass Caesarsa in average points per student and had to either earn 58 points for speaking French or have their highest-earning student gain 9 points overall. They held a lead in the positive percentage category, so as long as they didn't lose any points, they would keep that category. By the end of class, they had earned 81 points and only lost 1. They earned 32 points for speaking French but their highest student managed to just sneak past the leader from Period 3, giving the defending champion class a 3-2 series victory.
Flamingo eliminated Caesars Palace with a 3-2 series victory by winning average points per student (7.38-6.78), positive point percentage (96%-95%), and highest earning student (31-30). Caesars Palace, which could've become the first class period to advance to three consecutive Finals, won total points (251-236) and French percentage (55%-36%).

Period 7 "The Strat" versus Period 2 "Flamingo"
The 2024 Goeller Cup Final started on Tuesday, April 23. 7th Period became the 4th group of students to ever be crowned Goeller Cup Champions and the 5th class to win Mr. Bracken's end-of-year competition when the series ended on Tuesday, May 7. For the first time in history, the 2023-2024 school year was the third year in a row where the Goeller Cup was awarded. The Championship celebration was held on May 8, 2024.
The 2024 Goeller Cup Final was record-setting. The 7th Period Championship produced the first-ever repeat student winners of the Goeller Cup: seven students from the 2023 Period 2 championship-winning students were enrolled in Period 7. Similarly, had Period 2 won, it would have been the first-ever back-to-back champion for any class period. Period 2 (Flamingo) entered as the defending champion period and automatically advanced to the semi-final round. By advancing to the 2024 Goeller Cup Finals, Period 2's return to the final marked the second time and second year in a row where the defending championship class period appeared.
2024 Goeller Cup Finals Match-Up Logo
The 2024 Goeller Cup Final was the second Period 2 vs. Period 7 playoffs matchup. The two classes met in the inaugural tournament (where Period 7 was called Bloc 4), in which Period 7 won 3-2. Additionally, the 2024 Finals were only the second time that Period 3 did not advance to the Goeller Cup Finals (the other time being 2019). 2024 was the 5th time in 5 competitions that the number-one ranked class advanced to the final round.
The Strat (Period 7) opened the Goeller Cup Finals on April 23 and after one cycle of class days held a 3-2 lead. They earned an impressive 125 points on their first class day, while Flamingo (Period 2) underperformed their adversaries, only managing to earn 89 points. The top-earning student however earned 18 points on their first day, putting them more than two times ahead of Period 7 in this category.
The Strat had another impressive class on their second day of the competition, again earning over 100 points to extend their series lead, still 3-2. They continued to trail in the highest-earning student category and were also closely behind in French-speaking points, but elsewhere on the scoreboard they were in dominant control through two days.
Mr. Bracken was out sick on Period 2's second class day and Period 7's third class day. The classes received good reports from the sub and therefore did not lose any points from this day cycle. Flamingo managed to tighten the series on their third class day, even though they gave up their lead in the French-speaking category and found themselves down 4-1. Overall, the gap between the two classes was close in average points per student, and positive percentage, meaning that Period 2 could still easily turn the tides in their favor.
After four classes, the Strat continued to lead 4-1, never having trailed in the series to this point, but only earning up to 269 points through four days. Their 100-point class pace slowed down, allowing Flamingo to keep them within striking distance. After four days, both classes had combined for 7 negative points, meaning that the positive point percentage category was extremely close. Entering the final class cycle, it became clear that the series would likely come down to average points per student and positive points percentage to decide the championship.
On their final class days, the Strat increased their lead in every category, maintaining a 4-1 series lead after finishing their final class day of competition. Flamingo would need a big final class day to come back and defeat Period 7. They needed to maximize points to surpass the Strat in two categories since they led in highest student entering their last day. They needed to earn 104 points in their final class period. Doing so would have given them an advantage in positive point percentage and average points per student. Those two categories plus their highest-earning student category would have given them the victory. Unfortunately, Period 2 fell just shy of the required mark, earning 97 points on their final day. This was enough for them to edge out Period 7 in positive points percentage, but they were unable to capture a third category. When the bell rang at 8:20 AM, Period 7 became the 2024 Goeller Cup Champions. It's the first time that Period 7 has won the Goeller Cup. Additionally, seven students became the first-ever two-time Goeller Cup Champions and they received a commemorative two-time champions sticker as a part of their class party.
