Zaccaria is an immersive classroom gamification system that transforms the French classroom into a living fictional kingdom. Each class period assumes the identity of a Royal House of Zaccaria, while individual students become Nobles who help develop their House, advance an ongoing storyline, and compete for prestige throughout the school year.
Zaccaria is designed to encourage active participation, collaboration, academic growth, and continued engagement in the French classroom. Everyday classroom accomplishments contribute to a larger yearlong experience in which student actions can have lasting consequences.
Each student selects one of seven Zaccarian character types: Knight, Scholar, Builder, Cleric, Ranger, Merchant, or Spy. Characters develop through six Tiers. As students advance, they gain access to new individual privileges, while each character type also contributes unique abilities that can benefit the entire House.
Character advancement is earned—not automatic. Students earn Zaccars (ℤ), the official currency of Zaccaria, through their work and participation. New character Tiers become available as the House progresses through the year, and eligible Nobles can use their accumulated wealth to advance.
Houses work collectively to earn Étoiles through their accomplishments in class. Every 9 Étoiles allows a House to "turn the page" and unlock the next chapter of its story. Every 50 Étoiles unlocks the next Character Tier for purchase.
Étoiles may also become part of the adventure itself. Houses may encounter opportunities to spend or sacrifice their Étoiles to travel, overcome obstacles, unlock opportunities, or influence events within the Realm. Because each House earns its own Étoiles and makes its own decisions, Houses may experience the Kingdom of Zaccaria differently.
Every Étoile earned also contributes one House Point (HP) to the House's permanent score. Additional House Points can be earned through individual accomplishments, character advancement, storyline decisions, quests, and other achievements. Unlike Étoiles, which may sometimes be spent during the story, earned House Points remain part of a House's record.
The Royal House Hierarchy ranks the Houses according to their accumulated House Points, allowing the decisions and accomplishments of the entire school year to contribute to each House's standing within the Realm.
Zaccaria is more than a point system. Throughout the story, Houses must make decisions together. A House may choose where to travel, how to respond to a crisis, whether to spend valuable resources, which alliances to pursue, or whether an immediate advantage is worth a potential future consequence. Some choices provide rewards. Others create new challenges. Decisions made early in the year may return much later in the story. There is not always one "correct" choice.
Each House possesses Character Tokens representing the seven Zaccarian character types. These provide special House abilities that become more powerful as the Nobles representing that character advance. Using these abilities requires cooperation: at least two Nobles of the corresponding character type must agree to activate a Character Token.
Additional abilities, tokens, relics, resources, and advantages may also be discovered through quests and storyline events. Houses must decide whether to use these advantages immediately or save them for when they may matter most.
During the fourth quarter, the focus shifts from building the Realm to proving which House has become its strongest. In Act IV: Quest for the Goeller Cup, Houses enter a playoff competition in which advancement is determined by their actual classroom performance across a series of Trials. The Houses that survive the tournament advance toward the Goeller Cup Final, where one will ultimately rise above the others and claim the championship.
In Zaccaria, the story may be fictional—but the accomplishments belong to the students.
