The Goeller Cup Playoffs officially returned during the 2021–2022 school year. The season also marked the return of the competition's Most Valuable Player award, which, for the first time in history, was given an official name: the Helmerich Award. The award was named in honor of Mrs. Kristina Helmerich, who served as a French teacher at Mount Nittany Middle School during Mr. Bracken's student-teaching semester. Although Mr. Bracken did not work directly with Mrs. Helmerich, he recognized the important role played by all educators at Mount Nittany Middle School and the State College Area School District in his development as a teacher. Naming the award after Mrs. Helmerich paid tribute to her support and influence during the early stages of his educational career.
The 2021–2022 school year marked the first season in which every class adopted a unique team name and logo. Unlike the 2019 season, when logos shared a common design differentiated only by period number, each team's identity reflected a distinct theme inspired by French language and culture.
Many team names incorporated French-themed wordplay. For example, Period 3 became Les tRois, a pun combining trois ("three") with rois ("kings"), while Period 8 adopted the name Les Huîtres because the French word for oysters contains the number huit ("eight"). While not every team name relied on a pun, each drew inspiration from French language or culture.

The fourth contest was a short two-week competition that started at the beginning of the 4th marking period and lasted until spring break on 13 April 2022. The idea of this series was to be a "last chance" opportunity for a class to earn a late-season victory and move up in the standings. Period 7 (French III/IV) and Period 8 (French I) finished tied atop the standings with 490 points each. The tie was broken using negative points, with Period 7 losing only 37 points compared to Period 8's 62. As a result, Period 7 was awarded the victory. Remarkably, both classes finished just one point ahead of Period 1, which accumulated 489 points.

The 2022 season marked only the second time the Goeller Cup had been awarded and the third time that a single-elimination postseason tournament had been contested. Each round was scheduled to last for 5 class days, marking the first time that all three rounds were five day competitions.
Period 6 (French III/IV) earned the overall top-seed for the playoffs and an automatic berth into the semi-finals with 1 win and 3,330 points. Period 1 (French II)’s first-round matchup was against Period 4 Trail Time, the Millbrook version of study hall. Third-ranked Period 5 (French I) faced sixth-ranked Period 3 (French II) and fourth-ranked Period 7 (French III/IV) took on fifth-ranked Period 8 (French I). Through each class's first two days of competition in round 1, there was a lot of back-and-forth, especially between Periods 7 and 8. Notably, even Period 4 Trail Time managed to stay close to Period 1 for their first two days. Following Mr. Bracken's absence due to illness during what would have been the third day of competition, Round 1 was shortened from five class periods to four to ensure equal opportunities for all participating teams.
In the first round, Period 1 (Les Macarons) eliminated Period 4 (TrailTime) by a score of 3-2. They only trailed in the series after the first day of competition, which was a class day for Period 4. TrailTime remained competitive throughout the series, winning both the overall points category (329–326) and maintaining a perfect positivity percentage. However, Les Macarons secured the remaining categories to advance.

Period 3 (Les tRois) controlled the series from start to finish, maintaining at least a 4–1 advantage throughout the round. Period 5 started with a major disadvantage due to negative points during their first competition day. The Gaulois were only able to rally from their negative first day to win overall points. With the Period 3 victory, a semi-final battle between French II classes - Period 1 vs. Period 3 - was set. This was the only series of the first round where the lower-seeded team advanced.

The quarterfinal matchup between L'Éclair and Les Huîtres became one of the most memorable series in Goeller Cup history. The two teams combined for nearly 1,000 total points while establishing postseason records in four of the five competition categories.
Momentum shifted dramatically throughout the series. Following nearly every class period, all five categories swung in favor of one team or the other. Entering the final day, L'Éclair held a commanding 5–0 advantage. Although Les Huîtres had the final opportunity to respond, L'Éclair ultimately secured a 3–2 victory.

Period 6 "Les Triomphants" versus Period 3 "Les tRois"
In the 2022 Goeller Cup Final, Les tRois defeated Les Triomphants by a score of 3–2 to capture the championship.
Les Triomphants faced adversity early, opening the series with a positivity percentage of just 85%. Although they recovered impressively to finish at 98%, Les tRois avoided losing any points until the final day of competition. Positive percentage ultimately became the deciding category, with only 0.45 percentage points separating the two teams—the closest margin in Goeller Cup history at the time.
Les tRois also leveraged their smaller class size to secure the average points per student category while overtaking Les Triomphants in French-speaking points on the final day of competition.
Khris M. received the Helmerich Award as the Most Valuable Player of the 2022 Goeller Cup Playoffs after earning the most points during the postseason. Every member of Les tRois became a first-time Goeller Cup champion.
